It is my pleasure on behalf of the Board of Jersey Australia to invite you to the 2020 Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting.

This year Jersey Australia breaks new ground in hosting their AGM via video conference for the very first time. While an exciting and new way to host the AGM, we certainly look forward to returning to the more conventional face to face meeting and conference in 2021.

Jersey Australia will be using Zoom to host the Video Conference and we provide below the meeting information.  Please note that if this is the first time you have used Zoom, you will be required to download some software to your computer.  When connecting please ensure that you select the join with audio and video.

IDW Bushfire Appeal

Jersey Australia together with International Dairy Week and Global Impact Sale are pleased to announce that the distribution of funds from the IDW Bushfire Appeal has commenced providing significant direct cash support to affected dairy farmers in the Cobargo and Nth East Victoria region.

With the generous support of the Herd Improvement Industry, Dairy Farmers and Dairy Supplier and the even more generous support of those who purchased items from the Silent Auction, Cattle Sales and donations received from across Australia as well as around the world, approximately $113,000 was raised to provide direct financial support to dairy farmers

$50,000.00 of the funds raised has already been provided to Renee and Harley Salway, Renee tragically lost husband Patrick and Harley’s father who was killed with his father Robert in the fires at Cobargo to support the family through this time and into the future.

The balance of the funds is being distributed direct to 12 dairy farmers. 6 in the Cobargo region and 6 in Nth East Victoria

Jersey Australia General Manager Mr Glen Barrett said “Jersey Australia was proud to get behind and support the appeal.  The bushfire were a significant tragedy across the dairy farming community.  The tragic death of Robert Salway a long member of Jersey Australia with the well-known and regarded Wilgo Stud and his son Patrick was devastating and felt across the Association.

“We cannot thank all donors, buyers and supporters of the appeal enough” said Mr Barrett.  “and it certainly makes you swell with pride to see the dairy community come together to provide such amazing support when a lot of the industry has been challenged by long term drought, water shortage and below par milk price”

Director of IDW and Dairy Livestock Services Manager, Scott Lord said “it was a pleasure to have the dairy community support the bushfire appeal that we conducted during International Dairy Week. The funds raised via the auctions conducted as well as the many cash donations from Australia and overseas show that as an industry we care about our own. We are proud to be associated with such outstanding results and most importantly funds are getting to those in need in a timely fashion. On behalf of International Dairy Week, I sincerely thank all involved in this magnificent appeal.”

Declan Patten, Sales Manager for Global Impact Sales said “When we heard about the devastation that happened during this bushfire season we knew that we had to help. It was fortunate that this year we were hosting our very first auction at IDW and we knew we had a platform to help others in our dairy community. We are overwhelmed with the support received and couldn’t be prouder of the dairy community coming together during this difficult time.”

Update to Members re: Coronavirus

Jersey Australia advises that from today, a number of changes will be put in place to manage our office operations and services to members in line with imposed restrictions relating to coronavirus, whilst mitigating risk to staff and the wider community.

What does this mean for Jersey Australia and our members?

  1. The Jersey Australia Office will remain open
    1. Jersey Australia is enacting a Work from Home policy for staff where practicable.
  2. Member services will still be delivered as best possible however we do expect some limitations on what we can and cant do:
    1. Communications
      1. JA telephones will be diverted to mobiles and answered as normal
      2. All emails will remain monitored and responded to
        1. General enquiries:    jersey@jersey.com.au
        2. Registrations:           rego@jersey.com.au
        3. Classification:           class@jersey.com.au
        4. accounts                   accounts@jersey.com.au
      3. We are still working to understand what our access to the postal service is
        1. We encourage all members to use email instead of posting correspondence to ensure on time delivery
        2. Unless significant further restrictions are imposed by AgriBio management, we will have restricted access to mail however this could change if conditions deteriorate further.
    2. Registrations
      1. Registrations will still be processed
        1. As we expect limited access to the office during this shut down period, we encourage all members to use the online registration facilities via Jersey online http://jersey.com.au/jersey-online/; or
        2. Use the registration functionality in your Easy Dairy or Mistro farm management software; or
        3. Email your requirements to rego@jersey.com.au
        4. We will not be able to print and post registrations certificates during this period. Any requirements will be banked and processed when our access to the office will be returned.
        5. You will be able to access performance pedigree via Jersey Online if you required a pedigree for an urgent need.
        6. With limited ability for all to travel and go out this is a good time to bring your registrations up to date so we look forward to helping you do achieve this.
    3.  Classification
      1. Autumn Class Service
        1. JA is putting in place a limited classification tour to be held commencing late May.
        2. Due to business and Government imposed travel restrictions, we are unable to offer an Autumn tour opportunity  to Tasmania, Western Australia and Queensland in 2020.
          • Further details relating to dates will follow in other communications
        3. Members can still book a class visit via the Jersey Online Shop or email class@jersey.com.au with your class requirements. We are not asking members to pay upfront a booking fee for this tour.  http://jersey.com.au/product/autumn-2020-class-booking/
      2. Our of Tour Class
        1. We will review this on a case by case basis however nothing will be considered until May 1st the very earliest.
      3. Health of our staff and members is paramount and should a high level of risk be maintained, Autumn Class will be cancelled.
    4. Accounts 
      1. We encourage members who typically post cheques to use internet banking or pay by credit card options where possible to minimise staff contact external parties to process and bank cheques.
    5. Genomics / DNA
      1. Please continue to send samples in to the office.  They will be processed and at this time we are not aware of delays at the lab.

Deferment of AGM

Dear Members

Jersey Australia, in consultation with the Sunshine Coast Jersey Cattle Breeders Club and Jersey Qld,  wish to advise that the 2020 Jersey Australia Annual General Meeting and Conference, scheduled to be held in Noosa on June 2nd – 5th 2020, has been postponed due to the current Coronavirus pandemic.

While not an easy decision to make this far out from the event, we are in an unprecedented and rapidly changing situation with no ironclad guarantee that further travel and congregational event restrictions will be enforced.  The Board and organisers considered it appropriate to make this decision to prioritise members health and prevent unnecessary cost outlay that may not be recoverable.

Jersey Australia encourages all members to take appropriate steps as prescribed by the World Health Organisation and Federal and State Government Health Departments to maintain good health and hygiene for yourself, your family and your community during this time.

Jersey Australia will continue to plan an AGM to be held later this year in accordance with our constitutional requirements, which may include a meeting utilising video or teleconferencing.

We thank the Sunshine Coast Jersey Cattle Breeders Club and Jersey Qld for their efforts to date in putting together an exciting conference for members. Rest assured we aim to take our AGM and Conference to QLD when possible.

Member Encouragement Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2020 JA Youth Encouragement Award to be presented at the 2020 AGM to be held in Noosa, QLD in June

The Jersey Australia Member Encouragement Award recognises young adult members who are: 

  • Aged between 20 and 35 as at end of Feb 2020.
  • Actively engaged in and supportive of registration and classification either in their own, family or employers’ herd.
  • Actively involved and participating in local Jersey club activities

The nominations for the award are required to be submitted to Jersey Australia by clubs by no later than the end of March 2020  via email to jersey@jersey.com.au 

The winner of the Member Encouragement Award will win a trip to the 2020 AGM and Conference and will make a presentation to the AGM

Australian Jersey Journal Jan/ Feb 2020 Edition

European Young Breeders School – 2020 Team

Applications are now open for places on the five-strong Australian team that will compete at the European Young Breeders School in Battice, Belgium, in September 2020 with young dairy men and women representing all breeds encouraged to apply.

An Australian team competed at the European Breeders School for the first time in 2019, with all team members finishing in the top third of the results, three in the top fifteen. For 2020 the team will be led by Justin Johnston and 2019 team member, Julia Paulger.

“Planning for 2020 started as soon as we returned home,” says Mr Johnston. “For anyone looking to pursue a career in the dairy industry this is an incredible opportunity. The European Young Breeders School is the international reference point for training and show preparation, with almost 200 competitors from around the world expected to take part next year.”

Leadership development is at the heart of Australia’s EYBS program according to Julia Paulger, who will be returning to Belgium as joint team leader.
