Australia to host World Jersey Conference in 2025

Australian jerseys cows will be showcased to a global audience with the World Jersey Conference coming in 2025.

The World Jersey Cattle Bureau has agreed to host its annual conference in Australia for the first time since 2011.

The conference will start April 6 and finish at the Royal Sydney Show Jersey judging on April 21. A preliminary itinerary has been developed and will take visitors through Victoria and the NSW south coast, starting at the Gippsland Jersey Autumn Fair and visiting Western Victoria before moving to Northern Victoria where the Dairy’s Finest sale will be part of the program.

The delegation will then continue to Bega and along the south coast to Sydney.

Up to 100 people from across the globe, including Europe, North America, New Zealand and Asia are expected to join local Jersey farmers on the tour.

The conference was last held here in 2011 when Australia stepped in after the tsunami hit original host Japan. It had been planned to return to Australia in 2021 but was deferred because of COVID-19. This year the conference is in Denmark and it was held in Guatemala in 2023 and virtually from Rwanda in 2022.

One of the highlights of the Australian program will be a Future Leaders Forum with Jersey organisations around the world being invited to sponsor a potential future leader to attend.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said hosting the conference would build on the international marketing done in recent years to promote Australian Jerseys.

“Part of our reason for applying to host this event is to capitalise on the global marketing we have been doing in recent years,” Mr Barrett said. “We see this as a celebration of Australian Jerseys, with a strong focus on Australian cow families and sires.

“The visitors will see some great Jerseys along the journey.”

Jersey Australia has led a joint trade site at World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin, USA for the past two years which has led to improved international product recognition and sales.

“There is growing interest in the export market,” Mr Barrett said. “We had our first shipment of heifers to Indonesia last year, more heifers are about to be shipped to Pakistan, the Chinese market is growing again and there is a shipment being prepared to go to the UAE,” he said.

“There is certainly a growing market for Australian Jersey heifers and Australian genetics.”

Domestically, Jersey numbers have been increasing year-on-year and Jerseys now account for more than 15 per cent of the national herd, up from 10.5 per cent 15 years ago.

Mr Barrett predicted that interest in local Jerseys would spike after the conference. “Bringing international Jersey breeders here to see first-hand the high-quality cattle we’re breeding from high-quality Australian bulls will definitely benefit our local industry,” he said.

“The conference rotates around the world and we think we have the best Jersey cows in the world so we wanted to showcase them.

“This will be a great opportunity for Australian businesses to support the event and promote their Jersey genetics and products to the world.”

The World Jersey Cattle Bureau represents Jersey breeders, and their organisations, around the world. There are five world regions of the Bureau – Africa, Asia/Oceana, Europe, Latin America and North America. World conferences have been held since 1949.

A local committee is being formed to support the conference tour planning.

New partnership for On Farm Challenge

Jersey Australia is excited to announce ST GENETICS AUSTRALIA as our  new sponsor Major Sponsorship Partner for our signature competition the On-Farm Challenges – The Great Southern Challenge, the Great Northern Challenge and The Great Australian Challenge.

Our new partnership with ST GENETICS AUSTRALIA is a long-term sponsorship commitment which enables the Association to continue the On Farm Challenge as members know and love and foster the On Farm Challenges continued growth and development.

General Manager of Jersey Australia  Glen Barrett welcomed the partnership saying, “ST Genetics have a strong commitment of supporting events, shows and youth development and its an exciting opportunity for Jersey Australia to bring together Australia’s leading on farm challenge competition and a global leader in genetics and breed promotion in ST GENETICS.”

“STG Australia are excited with the opportunity to support the Jersey Australia On Farm Challenges” said Peter Semmens, General Manager of STG Australia.  “Such opportunities to sponsor such a respected and well-known feature of the Jersey Australia calendar rarely become available and when approached by Jersey Australia it was a pretty easy decision to take the role of sponsorship.

STG Australia commenced business in Australia in its current format approximately 4 years ago and in that time has incorporated the Gender Sorting laboratory together at Camperdown into its business and has commenced a strong commitment to the Australian dairy genetics industry by currently importing more than 250 Male and some female embryo’s a year combined of Jersey and Holstein.

The ratio of Jersey embryo’s is increasing as ST USA expands its own program , Peter commented , and the first resultant calves in Australia have now been born and those once Genomic tested on BPI and TPI  and other countries indexes will enter for collection and marketing of genetics.

Supporting this STG Australia is also expecting more Australian bred bulls to enter the collection facility. We see our linkage through Jersey Australia and events such as the STG Virtual Youth Show and incorporating the GSC as a fantastic steppingstone not only for STG Australia but also Jersey Australia and will be very keen to sit down with Jersey Australia once this year’s event is over to review and where and if needed to enhance the competition in line with STG Australia and Jersey Australia commitment to the Australian industry.

The change in Major Sponsor from Semex Australia was a mutually agreed but albeit difficult  decision for both Semex and Jersey Australia to end the long-term partnership.  Jersey Australia acknowledges the important and valued contribution that Semex Australia provided to the On Farm Challenges and we thank all at Semex Australia for their contribution over many years.

The Great Southern Challenge began in 1999 and then grew to incorporate The Great Northern Challenge in 2008 and The Great Australian Challenge in 2013.

Clubs are reminded that club challenges are required to be completed by the end of October with all results submitted by this date to the office.

Judging for the Great Northern Challenge will commence on or around November 5th with the Great Southern Challenge judging commencing oN or around November 10th.

2022 YOUNG BREEDERS SCHOOL

Applications open for Australia’s Young Breeders School 2022 Team

Applications are now open for places on the five-strong Australian team set to compete at the 20th anniversary Young Breeders School in Battice, Belgium, in late August with young dairy men and women representing all dairy breeds encouraged to apply.

An Australian team competed at the Young Breeders School for the first time in 2019, with all team members finishing in the top third of the results, three in the top fifteen. With the event, formerly known as the European Young Breeders School, not taking place due to the COVID pandemic over the last two years, team leader Justin Johnston is looking forward taking an Australian team back to Belgium.

“For anyone looking to pursue a career in the dairy industry this is an incredible opportunity,” says Mr Johnston. “The Young Breeders School is the international reference point for training and show preparation, with almost 200 competitors from around the world expected to take part.”

Leadership development is at the heart of Australia’s YBS program according to 2019 team member Julia Paulger.

“Standing alongside four friends as part of the first Australian team was an unbelievable experience – one I won’t forget. The memories and friendships we made and the experience we gained will last us a lifetime. Based on my experience I see this initiative playing a really important part in developing and broadening the horizons for Australian dairy youth for many years to come,” says Ms Paulger.

Formerly called the European Young Breeders’ School, the increasingly international nature of the school, including welcoming Australia’s first team in 2019, has seen the COVID-delayed 20th rebranded as the Young Breeders School to reflect the global reach of the event more accurately.

Backed by Melbourne Royal, Holstein Australia, Jersey Australia and a growing number of dairy industry businesses, applications are open to 18 to 25 year olds planning a future career in the industry. As well as competing at the School, the Australian team will take part in an educational tour through Holland and Belgium.

The five-day event, run by the Association Wallonne de l’Elevage, involves hands-on workshops including bedding, showmanship & clipping, as well as classroom-based sessions such as marketing and herd promotion. After three days of workshops and practice, participants put their skills to the test in stock judging, showmanship & calf classes.

Rohan Butler, Holstein Australia Chief Executive Officer, says the Association is proud to support the Australian 2022 Young Breeders School team.

“This initiative has been put together to assist emerging leaders in the dairy industry develop valuable leadership skills. It also presents a unique opportunity to experience that first hand and start building international relationships early in one’s career,” says Rohan.

2/…Applications open for Australia’s Young Breeders School 2022 Team

Glen Barrett, Jersey Australia General Manager says: “The response to Australia’s first Young Breeders School opportunity in 2019 was a real testament to the calibre of our young dairy men and women and our Australian dairy youth programs.

“For 2022 there will be a real focus on opportunities to build on the team members’ personal development outside of the show ring. This adds increasing value to the program and future opportunities to team members and the dairy industry.”

In addition to Melbourne Royal, Holstein Australia and Jersey Australia, 2022 team sponsors so far include the Genetics Australia, STG Australia and WFI Insurance.

Applications are now open and close Sunday 15th May.
