I hope 2022 has started off well for everyone!

Preparations are well and truly underway for what will be our 60th Annual Central Gippsland Jersey fair to be held on Tuesday 5th April at the Warragul Showgrounds.

Our Judge for the day will be Mr John Gardiner of Avonlea Holstein.

Australian Jersey Journal – January February 2022 Edition

Its a new year and what a way to kick it off with the next edition of the Australian Jersey Jorunal. With out newest EX-95 cow gracing the front cover, there is no doubt this edition is a must read.

In  this edition,

  • Throughout 2021, Jersey Australia has been undertaking the Jersey Most Profitable and Sustainable Cow Project to indentify the key advantages of the Jersey Cow in its contribution to farm profitability and it has delivered some exciting outcomes for the Jersey breed.  We caught up with project consultants Dr Steve Little and Scott Barnett to discuss the outcomes.   • The Spring 2021 Class tour is nearly complete and we celebrate the most rewarded cows.  With 1 * EX 95 and 7 * Ex 94 pointed cows so far,  it certianly has been a tour to celebrate.
  • Our Members Service Manager Lucy Webb-Wilson leaves JA at the end of January, Lucy sat down with Rick Baynes to reflect on her 3 1/2 years with JA
  • Tassie is the destination for the 2022 JA AGM and Conference and Dairy’s Finest sale.  We chatted with Ken Lawrence on what is planned for the event
  • Michelle Axford is undertaking her PhD onthe Calf Vitality Project which aims to deliver a Calf Vitality ABV.  A number of members are involved in the on farm data collection.
  • December ABV’s are out, We highlight the top top herds, young cows and bulls.

Merry Christmas From Jersey Australia

As 2021 draws to a close, silage and hay season nears completion, cows are back in-calf and we approach the festive season I am especially proud of the extraordinary year Jersey Australia has had. With inspiring work, commitment, professionalism and solidarity much has been achieved.

Each and every one of our members, board members, employees and industry organisations have helped to achieve progress in many areas of the association.

We have all shown great resilience and patience in managing life in the midst of COVID-19, your spirit and support to Jersey Australia has been appreciated. Your focus to grow the Jersey breed often in the toughest of circumstances has been amazing which will enable Jersey Australia to emerge from the events of the past few years stronger and more determined to show the world how truly wonderful this breed is.

Building and expanding our conversations and voice within the industry is seeing positive outcomes. Jersey Australia continues to develop programs and projects to highlight the benefits of milking the Jersey cow, some of which will be ready for release in the New Year.

Planning and strategy sessions to be held during the February board meeting will establish the grass roots for new ideas to be nurtured into the next projects.

International Diary week is set to take place in January allowing us to gather and enjoy some well overdue Jersey fellowship.

On behalf of the Jersey Australia Board and management team we thank you for your ongoing support of the organisation and hope you can spend precious time with loved ones over the festive period.

Please keep doing what you enjoy and most importantly stay safe and well.

August ABVs good news for Jerseys

The August 2021 ABV release has boosted the status of Australian Jerseys.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said there was stability in the Jersey proofs and a welcome emergence of young genomic bulls graduating to the Proven lists with enhanced proofs.
There were 14 new release Australian young genomic bulls sourced from nine studs and marketed by five A.I companies, which Mr Barrett described as a positive for the Australian Jersey breed. “This is the biggest new release of domestic bulls for many years, which is a strong sign,” he said.

“Breeders should be congratulated for maintaining faith in their breeding programs. With growing global interest in Australian Jersey bulls, there are exciting times ahead for the breed.”

Jersey bull proofs have improved as new daughters joined herds across Australia, with bulls such as DOUGGAN and INVINCIBLE adding 91 and 51 daughters respectively.
DOUGGAN, marketed by Genetics Australia and bred by White Star Jerseys, was the number one bull on the August ABV, improved his proof by 38 BPI to 431 with a high jump in daughters flowing from autumn calvings into his proof.

INVINCIBLE was another big mover, adding 68 BPI points to 394 BPI.
World Wide Sires’ Australian bulls JIMINY, BPI 387 and MATT, BPI 347 were second and third, with White Star bred bulls PUBLICAN with a BPI of 319 marketed by Agri-Gene and VALENBLAST in the GA stable with a BPI of 317 rounding out the top five bulls.
CSCWOODSIDE – Gelbeado Park WOODSIDE, a MATT son from the Central Sires Co-op / ABS Global – Australia stable, is a new bull on the market and tops the young genomic list with a BPI of 396. GA bulls INVINCIBLE – Loxleigh Hatman VInce 5963 and PICKLE – Wallacedale Pickle with a BPI of 387 round out the top three on the young bull lists.

Rob and Sandra Bacon’ Brookbora Jerseys retained the number one Herd spot with a herd BPI of 191. Con and Michelle Glennen’s WHITE STAR Jerseys was second with a BPI of 176 followed by John and Marg Cockerell’s WARRAIN Jerseys with BPI of 166.

The top young heifer in the August ABV release was LANGDALE MATT NAOMI 2, owned by Darien and Alex Matthews and with a BPI of 392.

John and Margaret Cockerell’s WARRAIN IRWIN LOVE LIES was the top cow with a BPI of 491 up from 477.

Top cow on conventional proofs was JACKIAH VALENTINO PRIMROSE 3000 owned by Simon Reid with a BPI of 500.

Geoff Akers Appointed to Board of Jersey Australia

Jersey Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Geoff Akers to the Board of Jersey Australia for a 2 year term.  The appointment fills the vacancy on the Board following the 2021 Board Elections. The appointment was approved by the Board at the July 21st Board meeting.

Mr Akers with wife Natalie and family, farm the LOXLEIGH Jersey Stud at Tallygaroopna in Nth Victoria.  The LOXLEIGH stud is well recognised for excellence breeding many On Farm Challenges winners including the 2017 Great Australian Supreme Champion Loxleigh Badger Iris 4 as well as 23 Bulls into AI programs including current high rating bull INVINCIBLE.  LOXLEIGH is also 19th on the DataGene top BPI herd list.

Mr Akers brings a wealth of leadership and governance experience to the Board having previously served on the boards of Dairy Australia, Murray Dairy, National Dairy Alliance and Northern Victoria Irrigation Renewal Project including terms as Chair of Dairy Australia and Murray Dairy.  Mr Akers also chaired the VFF Water Council.

Jersey Australia President Lisa Broad acknowledged the significant experience and capability of what Mr Akers will bring to the Jersey Australia Board. “Geoff’s skills in governance and directors role will be highly advantageous for Jersey Australia as we continue the positive changes we have made to improving the governance of the Association”.  Ms Broad also noting  Geoff’s strong relationship with dairy industry groups.  “Geoff is well respected within Industry groups and will enhance the work that JA has been doing to build stronger industry relationships”.

Ms Broad thanked Mr Akers for committing to the Board noting his keenness to continue building on established projects as well as bringing fresh ideas to the Board.  “Geoff is very willing to contribute and grow the Jersey Breed in Australia”.

At the 2021 Board elections, only 3 nominations were received from members for the 4 vacant Board positions.  The Jersey Australia constitution enables the JA Board to fill any vacancy with a casual appointment.  Mr Akers will be required to re-nominate in 2023 should he choose to continue on the Board.

2021 Jersey Australia Board Appointments

Thanks to all who attended the Jersey Australia AGM yesterday. It was great to see you all there.

We welcome the incoming new Board for the Association and pleased to announce that Lisa Broad is the new President of the Association. Congratulations Lisa.

Brian Wilson has been appointed Vice President and Jamie Drury takes on the Treasurer role.

Jane Sykes has returned as the Promotions Chairs and we also welcome Wayne Kuhne to the Genetics Chair.

Alan Carson and Robert Anderson are general members of the Board.

 

 

 

Postponement of JA AGM

Dear Members

Very late in the evening of Wednesday May 26th, Jersey Australia was advised by an attendee at the Jersey Australia AGM and Conference on the following days

  • Monday May 24th
    • Dairy’s Finest Sale
  • Tuesday May 25th
    • Lunch at Poowong Nth Hall
    • Farm visit at Wallacedale Jerseys
    • JA Awards Dinner
  • Wednesday May 26th
    • Farm visit at Majestic Jersey

That they have had a potential Tier-2 exposure to COVID-19.

Following this, the Jersey Australia board took the appropriate action and postpone the 2021 Annual General Meeting to mitigate any potential further risk.  Members and guest’s health and wellbeing was our highest priority.

We are pleased to advise the attendee has been tested for COVID-19 and has tested negative.

The Jersey Australia 2021 AGM will be re-schedule and be held on Thursday June 24th 2021 via video conference on zoom.  Members will also be able to phone into the meeting.   Please registered your intention to attend by clicking  on the following link and completing the registration form.
